Tipping is uncommon and can even cause confusion. Excellent service is simply part of the experience.
Do's
- Pay the exact amount on the bill
- Say "gochisousama" as a thank you when leaving
Don'ts
- Don't leave cash on the table
- Don't insist if staff returns your tip
Tips
At ryokan or high-end restaurants, gratitude in small envelopes (kokorozuke) is occasionally given, but it's not required.
