How do you tell a Japanese restaurant about a food allergy?
In writing, in Japanese, before you order. English is not reliably understood in small restaurants, and a serious allergy is the wrong place to guess. Name the ingredient, ask whether the dish contains it, and be aware that a kitchen that cannot guarantee it will say so — which is worth more than a reassuring yes.
