Bathing is done fully nude
Public baths and onsen are gender-separated, and swimwear is not worn. It can feel unfamiliar at first, but everyone is focused on relaxing—not on you.
Do's
- Leave all clothing in the locker or basket in the changing area
- Carry only your small towel for modesty if you wish
- Enter the correct gender-marked entrance (男 for men, 女 for women)
Don'ts
- Don't wear a swimsuit, underwear, or any clothing in the bath
- Don't bring a phone or camera into the bathing area
Tips
The small towel can be held in front of you while walking between the changing room and the bath.
