Many traditional onsen and public baths still prohibit tattoos, regardless of size or design. Policies vary widely, so it's worth checking in advance.
Do's
- Check the facility's tattoo policy before visiting
- Look for tattoo-friendly onsen, which are increasingly common
- Cover small tattoos with waterproof bandages where allowed
Don'ts
- Don't assume your tattoo will be overlooked
- Don't argue with staff if entry is refused—policies are strict
Tips
Private bath rooms (kashikiri-buro) at ryokan are a great alternative if you have tattoos.
