Can you take photos of people in Japan?
Ask first. Photographing strangers without permission is treated as an intrusion rather than street photography, and in Kyoto's Gion some private lanes carry fines for it. Shops, temple halls and station staff areas may ban cameras outright; the sign is usually a crossed-out camera, and it means exactly that.
