No eating or drinking on local trains
On commuter and subway lines, eating is avoided out of respect for the shared space. Long-distance trains like the shinkansen are an exception.
Do's
- Wait until you're off the train, or use a long-distance line
- Sip water discreetly if needed
Don'ts
- Don't eat sandwiches, snacks, or hot food on local trains
- Don't drink coffee or strongly scented drinks
