Omikuji and ema are part of the experience
Paper fortunes (omikuji) and wooden wish plaques (ema) are sold at shrines. They're a meaningful souvenir, not just a decoration.
Do's
- Read your fortune; tie bad ones to the rack at the shrine
- Write a wish on an ema and hang it in the designated area
Don'ts
- Don't take ema home—they belong at the shrine
- Don't litter omikuji you don't want
Tips
Good fortunes are sometimes kept; bad ones are tied at the shrine so the bad luck stays behind.
