What should you wear to a shrine or temple in Japan?
Ordinary clothes are fine; there is no dress code at most sites. Cover your shoulders, keep skirts and shorts on the longer side, and wear shoes you can slip off, because halls you enter are entered barefoot or in socks. Hats come off inside, and at a funeral or a formal ceremony the bar is much higher.
