How do you wash your hands at a shrine?

One ladleful does all of it. Fill the ladle, rinse your left hand, then your right, pour a little into your left hand to rinse your mouth — never touching the ladle to your lips — and finally stand it upright so the last of the water runs down the handle. Do not drink from the ladle and do not spit into the basin; the water goes onto the stones beside it.
