Less than you used to, but yes. Cards and IC cards work in cities, chains and most restaurants; small shops, shrines, older ramen counters, some buses and every festival stall are cash only. Carry a few ten-thousand-yen notes, and when you pay, put the money in the tray on the counter rather than into the cashier's hand.
