How do you say thank you in Japanese?
"Arigatou gozaimasu" is the safe one — polite, usable with anyone, and worth the extra syllables over the casual "arigatou". Add a small bow and it carries further than the words do. When someone has gone out of their way for you, "tasukarimashita" — "that really helped me" — says something the English thank you does not.
