Remove shoes at the entrance
Ryokan, traditional inns, and most homes have a clear line between outdoor and indoor space. Remove your shoes at the genkan (entryway) before stepping up.
Do's
- Place shoes neatly, facing the door
- Use the indoor slippers if provided
- Watch for the step that marks the indoor boundary
Don'ts
- Don't step onto the raised floor with shoes on
- Don't leave shoes scattered
